Kern County Restricted Material / Operator ID Permit and Use Report data are available for direct download. Each download covers one calendar year. All data are available as
tab delimited text files. All data are stored in zip file format. Please view the
README file associated with the dataset of your choice for complete file structure information. The Department provides no technical support for these data.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING PERMIT AND USE REPORT DATA

Scroll down to and click on PERMITS or USE REPORTS for your year of interest.

Click OPEN when presented with the File Download dialog.

Depending on the zip software you are using either browse to where you would like to store the data or click "Extract To..." and select the location on your computer where you would like to store the data.

Click OK.

Close any open windows.

In Windows Explorer open the folder on your computer where you unzipped the files and you will see the following: kcXXpmt.asc and kcXXpst.asc for permit data or kcXXpurs.txt for use report data where XX is your two digit year of interest.

Information such as permittee, permit number, commodity, acreage, and contact information are in the kcXXpmt.txt file. To view restricted materials available to specific permittees, select kcXXpst.txt.

Right click on the file you would like to view and "Open With..." either Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access.

If you choose Microsoft Excel, your file will open and you will see your data.

If you choose Microsoft Access, a Linktext Wizard box will come up and you must click Next….Next…..Next and then Finish. Open the table and you will see your data.

To view use reports select kcXXpurs.asc.

Right click on the file and "Open With..." Microsoft Access. YOU CANNOT VIEW USE REPORTS IN MS EXCEL because of the 65,536 record limitation.

A Linktext Wizard box will come up and you must click Next….Next…..Next and then Finish. Open the table and you will see your data.
